Setter Apprentice
Anna
(She/Her)
I first got into setting in the fall/winter of 2021 at a small bouldering gym in rural Ontario where I volunteered my time. I’ve been apprentice setting routes at Basecamp for a few months now.
The main challenge I’ve found in setting so far is detaching myself emotionally from the climb. Sometimes it can be hard to see something you spent a lot of time working on get changed or criticized but at the end of the day the tweaks make the climb more enjoyable and exciting for everyone, which is what matters.
Favourite holds?
I’m just getting into setting seriously, so it’s hard to say what my favourite wall features or hold types are to set just yet. I know I love climbing crimpy slabby climbs, but I also love powerful overhang (even slopers sometimes!).
I think my favourite type of problems to set so far are problems which make you pause and think about the beta, even on easy climbs.
